NMMS or National Means Cum Merit Scholarship is a central level scheme by Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Education, govt. of India. The benefit of this scheme is available only to students who have successfully cleared the NMMS Scholarship examination. The beneficiaries of this scholarship will be given Rs.1000 per month, i.e. Rs.12,000 per annum and it will be given to the students at class IX level, and continued up to class Xll.

An Entrance Test (NMMS Exam) is conducted by the concerned State Government/UT to select students for the award of National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship in the State/UT. For the academic year 2023-24, online application for NMMS scholarship is closed and the last date is 31st December 2023. Those who appeared in the NMMS scholarship exam are waiting for their results to be published. Students can check the scholarship result on the official website.

NMMS Scholarship 2024

National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS), is a central government initiative launched in May, 2008 by the Department of School Education and Literacy. Its primary objective was to select and provide financial assistance to deserving students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Every year, the central government provides 1 lakh fresh scholarships to students to minimize the dropout rate at secondary school level.

At the initial time, each student was given an annual amount of Rs 6000. However, from the AY 2017, the amount of scholarship has been raised to Rs.12,000 which is disbursed to the students in monthly installments of Rs.1000. Those who have passed class VIII examination with 55% marks (5% relaxation for reserved candidates) and enrolled in class IX, as well as having annual family income is less than Rs. 3.5 lakhs are eligible to apply for this scholarship.

Also, students must prepare for NMMS entrance exam and qualify the Mental Aptitude Test (MAT) as well as Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). Students who clear both test shall receive Rs 12,000 per annum for four years from Class 9th onward up to Class 12th.

Eligibility for NMMS Scholarship 2024

  • Students in grades 9 through 12 are eligible.
  • Applicant must be a regular student studying in any government/local body/government-aided school.
  • Applicant must have secured a minimum of 55% or more marks in the class VIII final examination. Also, the qualifying mark for SC/ST students is 50%.
  • Students admitted to Kendriya Vidyalaya (KVS) and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) or any other private/ boarding schools are not eligible for the scholarship.
  • The annual family income of the students must be below Rs. 3.5 lakh from all sources.

NMMS Scholarship Amount

A total of 1,00,000 fresh scholarships will be awarded to meritorious students under the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship every year. The number of scholarships is divided between each state and union territory. The scholarship amount is Rs.12,000 per year per student which will be awarded to selected scholars on an annual basis.

NMMS Scholarship 2024

The scholarship amount is credited to the student’s bank account through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) using the Public Financial Management System (PFMS). This grant is available for students up to four years (from Class-IX to Class-XII). Students have to renew the application every year while passing to the next class.

NMMS Scholarship 2024 Online Application

Students applying for the NMMS scholarship for the first time will have to complete registration process on the National Scholarship Portal. Follow the steps below to register.

  • Step 1: To start with visit the NSP Scholarship Portal or else open the link @scholarships.gov.in.
  • Step 2: Click on ‘Fresh Application’ under Applicant Corner.
  • Step 3: Now click on New Registration button; Accept the Terms and Continue, then select Continue.
  • Step 4: Select I have Aadhaar or Enrollment ID (EID), enter your mobile number and type OTP, fill captcha then click on Verify button.
  • Step 5: Enter the Aadhaar number, fill the OTP you received on the mobile number linked to Aadhaar, type the captcha code, and click on the Verify button.
  • Step 6: Once the registration form is opened, provide the following information.
    • Scholarship type (Scholarship Scheme/incentive Scheme)
    • Scholarship Category (Pre Matric or Post Matric/MCM/Top Class)
    • State of Domicile
    • Father/Mother name
    • Email ID
  • Step 7: Type the captcha code that appears and click on the Register button.

Note: Before proceeding with the registration process, make sure that the NPCI MAPPER status is completed.

NMMS Scholarship Application Process

Following successful registration applicants will be assigned with a registration number which will be required at the time of login.

  • Visit the National Scholarship Portal, then select the Fresh Application option.
  • Enter Application ID or Registration Number, Password and click on Login button.
  • Enter the one time password received on the registered mobile number and click on Confirm OTP then Set a new password and submit it.
  • On the dashboard, click on the ‘Application Form’.
  • Provide general information like Single Girl Child (yes/no), Category, Annual family income, Aadhaar number, etc.
  • Enter academic details like Enrollment or registration number, Admission year, Roll number, Present class/course, Mode of study, Previous Board/University details, Class 10th/12th’ Roll No, Board Name, Year of passing, Marks, etc.
  • Provide other details such as whether you are orphan (yes/no), disabled (yes/no), marital status, guardian’s profession, etc. then click on Save & continue button.
  • Go to Scheme Details and select National Means Cum Merit Scholarship (NMMS).
  • Upload the required documents as mentioned.
  • Cross check the information provided and then click on the Submit button.

NMMS Scholarship Syllabus and Exam Pattern

NMMS is a centrally sponsored scheme but its entrance examination is conducted by each State/UT at the 8th standard level to select students for awards. The NMMS Scholarship Examination is consist of two tests, the pattern of which is as follows:

  • Name of TEST: Mental Ability Test (MAT) and Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT)
